The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has taken note of the official statement released by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) National Directorate Headquarters (NDHQ), dissociating itself from a viral Facebook publication concerning the collection of NANS Capitation dues.

NANS wishes to set the record straight: At no time has NANS announced or claimed a formal partnership with the NYSC for the collection of Capitation dues.

The impression created in public space was the result of misinformation stemming from media reports that amplified a random, informal discussion on Facebook. NANS has never approached the NYSC for any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), collaboration, or formal agreement regarding capitation dues collection.

It is imperative to state that the proposal regarding capitation dues is neither born out of greed nor an attempt to overburden Nigerian students:

  1. Constitutional Provision: Just as students pay Student Union Government (SUG) dues on their respective campuses, NANS—as the apex student body carrying broader national responsibilities—possesses a constitutional mandate to collect capitation dues for operational efficiency.
  2. Operational Independence: Direct collection mechanisms are being explored to ensure NANS remains financially independent and capable of intervening effectively in student welfare matters nationwide.

While NANS reserves the right as a national organization to propose strategic partnerships to government agencies or institutions, any agency retains full prerogative to accept or decline such proposals.

This clarification is issued so that students, stakeholders, and the general public are properly guided and not misled by unverified interpretations of informal discussions.

When all necessary operational measures are finalized at the NANS National Headquarters, the leadership will officially meet with and publicly announce any designated agency or platform partnered with for the exercise.

Until then, members of the public and all Nigerian students are advised to disregard any reports suggesting that an agreement or partnership already exists between NANS and the NYSC. NANS remains resolutely committed to transparency, effective representation, and protecting the interests of all Nigerian students.
